West of Redding on Highway 299 is where you will find the Trinity River. It takes just over an hour to navigate the twists and turns on this two-lane road from Redding to get over the hill into Trinity County. The steelhead fishing water begins another few miles down the hill in Lewiston, California, just below the Lewiston Dam. From Lewiston, the river courses its way to a meeting with the Klamath River about 120 miles down the road at Weitchpec. Most all of the river is fishable during the steelhead season that usually begins in October and lasts into March. Stream restoration and improved habitat have created an incredible fishery for steelhead in recent years.
Our trips involve floating the river in drift boats. During the season, there are opportunities for taking large brown trout and steelhead using nymphs, traditional steelhead and Spey flies.
We recommend six and seven weight rods in both single-handed and Spey rods, 9ft to 13ft in length with a variety of floating and sinking lines that enable us to take advantage of whatever opportunity we encounter to hook and land steelhead and sea run brown trout.
